NYC Foster Care Data Challenge

March 1, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Here is a message from the Authorea, the leading collaborative platform to read, write, discuss, and publish research:

The New York State Office of Children and Family Services states that in 2013, children in New York City spent 2.5 million days in institutional care. Furthermore, each year, close to 1,000 young people age out of the New York City foster care system as a result of the state failing to reunite them with their families or place them in permanent homes. They are subsequently forced into the world without housing, financial assistance or emotional support.

THE CHALLENGE

As an extension of the White House Foster Care & Technology Hackathon, the objective of this Data Challenge is to recruit and retain foster families in New York City.  The intention of this interdisciplinary & experiential open-ended event is to utilize scientific data, design and digital solutions in useful and positive ways.

The NYC Foster Care Data Challenge is to design a digital solution that would help identify and on-board potential foster families in New York City. Families who can dedicate their time to helping a child in need, by providing a safe and secure home and the support the child needs to reach their full potential.

Who Can Participate?

This challenge is an applied learning opportunity for students and enthusiasts who have an interest in analytics, data science and storytelling. All levels of participants are encouraged to participate, as the judges will be looking for creativity and real application of the model. Data science enthusiasts, UX/UI designers, entrepreneurs, students, product managers, digital marketers are encouraged to participate.

The goal is to design a digital solution that would help identify and on-board potential foster families in New York City. Families who can dedicate their time to helping a child in need, by providing a safe and secure home and the support the child needs to reach their full potential.
