In a nutshell: Bloomberg Philanthropies is of course founded by Mike Bloomberg: former New York City mayor, entrepreneur, billionaire and philanthropist. In total, Bloomberg has donated $2.4 billion to a variety of causes. Bloomberg Philanthropies focuses on five key areas: Public Health, Environment, Education, Government Innovation and Arts. The organization bids itself as a leader striving to take on the greatest challenges, spreading the solutions that work by harnessing data and promoting accountability, and advocating and forging public-private partnerships.
Bloomberg donated $120 million for a new John Hopkins building, which includes a children’s hospital, and gave $10 million to save kids from drowning in Bangladesh, where 12,000 children die from drowning each year. The philanthropies’ global reach extends to Tanzania in the form of a $15 million commitment to maternal health, an initiative expected to impact 50,000 women and children.
In New York, the Young Man’s Initiative, a Bloomberg private-public partnership, provides opportunities for black and Latino youth. Bloomberg also focuses on education policy by actively engaging in advocacy to improve achievement and career goals for high school and college graduates.
