Founded in 1940, the George Hoag Family Foundation was the vision of George and Grace Hoag, and their son George II.
The foundation was born out of the significant wealth acquired by the senior George Hoag’s role in the J.C. Penny retail chain. J.C. Penny had acquired George and Grace’s Golden Rule General Store, which they ran together in Wyoming, and Hoag rose through the ranks, ultimately becoming the Vice President of the company in New York.
Though George, Grace and George II have passed, the foundation continues to be run by the third generation of family, who sit as members of both its Board of Directors and its staff. The foundation continues to provide leadership and grow its impact with the Hoag Hospital in Orange County, Calif., one of the original projects of the foundation and a facility to which the three founding Hoags were deeply philanthropically and personally committed.
The George Hoag Family Foundation’s aims are to “improve social conditions, promote human welfare and/or alleviate pain and suffering.”
Major Program Categories: The foundation brings its mission to life through specific support of community healthcare, social services and youth programming, with a current focus on “safety-net issues and basic needs grants.”
The Hoag Hospital (which started in Newport Beach, Calif. and now includes two facilities in Irvine as well) is emblematic of the family’s goals when they established the foundation, to offer quality healthcare to all members of the community.
Recently, the foundation has supported several projects and organizations serving vulnerable child populations. A few examples include grants to several Boys and Girls Clubs throughout California, CASA of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Youth Network, and Families Forward.
How to Apply: For those interested in a grant from the foundation, step one is to submit a letter of inquiry (LOI) via mail. The LOI should be no longer than two pages, and should cover goals and needs addressed by a potential grant. LOIs are accepted year round.
For organizations that then receive an invitation to submit a full proposal, there are two potential deadlines. Applications received by the foundation’s March 31 deadline will be reviewed in May. There is also a September 30th deadline for applications to be reviewed in November.
