In a nutshell:
The Sierra Health Foundation was founded in 1985 in an effort to improve the health and quality of life for those living within their small 5 county regions in Northern California, near Sacramento. In 1987, the foundation expanded their reach to the current 26 counties in the northeast section of California.
The foundations earlier grant programs revolved around issues of AIDS, access to prenatal care, and children’s oral health and managed care. In 2006, the foundation launched their REACH Youth Program, which supports youth transition to adulthood services along with their Health Leadership Program, which helps to strengthen nonprofits by providing leadership training to staff. In 2011, Sierra Health launched the Healthy Sacramento Coalition to help formulate and implement a disease prevention plan for Sacramento County.
Most recently, the foundation has expanded their reach with their Respite Partnership Collaborative, which is a public-private partnership with the County of Sacramento, Division of Behavioral Health Services that focuses on increasing mental health service options as well as with their Positive Youth Justice Initiative, which works to improve the outcomes of young people involved in the child welfare and juvenile justice systems.
The foundation also partners with Sierra Nevada Journeys on their outdoors education program for youth at Grizzly Creek Ranch Camp and Conference Center.
