In a nutshell:
The Stoneleigh Foundation’s purpose is to “improve the life outcomes of vulnerable children and youth.” Started by philanthropist John C. Haas (1918-2011) and his wife Chara in 2006, the foundation is one of several managed by members of the Haas family.
The foundation funds fellowships focused on juvenile justice, child welfare, violence prevention, and related fields (such as education, health and behavioral health, particularly as they relate to dependent and delinquent populations). These fall into two categories: The Stoneleigh Fellowship and the Emerging Leader Fellowship.
The Stoneleigh Fellowship gives accomplished practitioners, researchers and advocates the opportunity to bring their reform ideas to fruition in Greater Philadelphia. They focus specifically on individuals who can “connect the unconnected” and bring government, community and private systems into one reform plan. Most of these individuals have advanced degrees and substantial professional experience.
While in the past, Stoneleigh has supported projects that have been national in scope, they are currently prioritizing fellows whose work directly impacts the Greater Philadelphia region. Given the deep connection between state policies and outcomes for children and youth in Greater Philadelphia, they also fund fellowships focused on effecting change at the state level in Pennsylvania.
The fellowship’s stated purpose is to approach reform through individuals who will:
- Develop new approaches to entrenched or emerging challenges in our areas of focus
- Identify, validate and test promising programs and practices
- Enrich and inform the fields of interest
- Inform and affect public policy and practice
- Improve life outcomes and opportunities for vulnerable youth
The Emerging Leader Fellowship is a one- to two-year program allows individuals within three years of completing an undergraduate or graduate degree to work collaboratively with a host organization to “shape and execute a discrete project that simultaneously advances the mission of the organization.”

How to Apply:
Applications for the Stoneleigh Fellowship are accepted on a rolling basis; the process begins with a two-page Letter of Inquiry, describing one’s intentions for the fellowship. These should be sent, along with a resume or CV, to [email protected] with the subject “LOI from [applicant].” More information on application contents can be found here. Information on current fellows can be found here.
The Foundation typically awards three to four Emerging Leader Fellowships annually. Greater Philadelphia nonprofits submit and refine ideas in October-November, candidates are recruited in December-January and fellowships are announced in March. Information on the process can be found here. Information on current fellows can be found here.
