Fostering Families Today and Adoption Today Magazines Move to Southern California

Two award-winning magazines, Fostering Families Today and Adoption Today, have been acquired by Fostering Media Connections (FMC), the nonprofit organization that publishes The Chronicle of Social Change.

The magazines, founded by Richard Fischer in 1998, are sent to the homes of foster and adoptive parents around the country and provide those parents with information to help guide their parenting journey.

Fischer passed away on Thanksgiving Day last year after a long battle with cancer. His desire was to continue supporting families nationwide through these two publications, and FMC partnered with him to map out a future for them.

“It’s a great honor to take on the important task that Richard and his wife Annie set out to do,” said Daniel Heimpel, executive director of FMC. “Providing foster parents with a sense of community and the information that they need to do their best in what is an extremely difficult calling is a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

FMC will retain Kim Phagan-Hansel, who has edited and designed Fostering Families Today and Adoption Today for the past 15 years.

“Every day I worked alongside a man who dedicated his heart and soul to educating families who stepped up to care for some of the world’s most vulnerable children,” Hansel said in an email. “It was an honor and a privilege to work with him and I will do my best to ensure that his legacy lives on through the pages of the magazine, and with the help of the Fostering Media Connections team that believes whole-heartedly in his mission to help foster and adoptive families to do their best on behalf of the children in their care.”

Fostering Families Today won the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Adoption Excellence Award in 2014 and was the National Association of Social Work’s Media Award Winner in 2012.
