The highly publicized My Brother’ Keeper initiative (MBK), a federal project to improve the lives of young minority males, will be spun out of the White House and established as an independent nonprofit.
President Obama is scheduled to speak today in New York at Lehman College about racial tension and the recent events in Baltimore as well as the racially charged national climate. He will sit down for a roundtable discussion with young black and Hispanic men.
During his remarks, he’s expected to announce the creation of an independent nonprofit called the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance. Joe Echevarria, former CEO of Deloitte LLP, will head the new alliance.
Other leaders and corporations involved in the organization include: Alonzo Mourning, John Legend, John Rogers and top executives at PepsiCo, News Corp., Sprint, BET and Prudential Group Insurance.
The initiative was created to build private and public sector partnerships to expand opportunities for boys and young men of color. Though some federal resources have been made available under the initiative, the majority of dollars committed to it have come from foundations.
