Adoption and Foster Care by Gay and Lesbian Parents in the United States

The report estimated in 2007 that there were about two million gay couples interested in fostering or adopting youth, and that 65,000 adopted children were already living with gay adoptive parents. Study authors hypothesized that any move to nationally prevent gay adoptions would bear a high cost to states.
