Researchers from the University of Colorado, Aurora and the University of Rochester conducted a study to determine the effects of a public-health nurse home visitation program on at-risk mothers and children. Published in JAMA Pediatrics, the study revealed that the home visitation by nurses reduced mortality for both mothers and children living in disadvantaged areas.
Using a randomized clinical trial for mothers in public obstetric and pediatric care in Memphis, the researchers looked at the impact of the program on pregnancy outcomes and maternal and child health up until age 2 over the course of nearly two decades. Study participants included largely African-American women and their first-born children living in lower socioeconomic urban neighborhoods.
