The Departments of Education, Labor and Health and Human Services are looking to consolidate or at least integrate funding for “career pathways,” particularly for low-income and drop-out youths.
According to a blog on the Department of Education website, the request for information (RFI) is the first attempt to assess “the benefits of and challenges to aligning diverse funding streams, programs, and stakeholders around career pathway systems; and the current and potential future use of career pathways systems to help at-risk populations gain skills and access the middle class.”
The move to develop a multi-agency approach to career development was anticipated. All three departments issued a joint letter to state agencies in 2012 urging them to develop career pathways strategies. A large-scale evaluation of such programs is currently underway, funded by the Administration for Children and Families.
