Youth Related Grant Highlights 2013:
Forward Together, Oakland, Calif., $50,000 for general operating support.  Forward Together works with community leaders and organizations to transform culture and policy to catalyze social change. The organization believes that all people should have the economic, social, and political power to make their own decisions about their bodies, gender, and sexuality. By developing strong leaders, building networks across communities, and implementing innovative campaigns, Forward Together is making its mission a reality. A 2013 grant will help support its nation-wide Strong Families initiative, a long term project that seeks to broaden the definition of family and advocate for changes that support families that are pushed to the margins.

League of Young Voters, New York, $50,000 for innovative storytelling initiative. The League of Young Voters uses social media outreach and cultural organizing, including hip hop, art, and slam poetry, to reach young people online and on the streets. During election cycles, it runs targeted data-driven voter contact and turnout programs. The rest of the year, it organizes constituents around issues that make sense to young people, like juvenile justice, green jobs, and electoral access. A 2013 grant will support the League’s efforts to build one of our nation’s most trusted destinations for online, youth-oriented content that educates, mobilizes, and raises the critical consciousness of America’s largest and most technologically advanced generation. All of its programming will aim to “edutain” and mobilize the Rising American Electorate to get involved in the civic process beyond just voting. It will use Ustream, which streams live content to millions of people each month, to connect content creators, build a large and active viewership base, and bring new voices and stories into the national civic engagement narrative.

Game Changer Chicago Design Lab, $30,000 for A Day In The Life Initiative.  Ci3 is an interdisciplinary center at the University of Chicago that works to advance sexual and reproductive health. The Game Changer Chicago Design Lab is one of Ci3’s signature initiatives using storytelling and game design in an asset-building framework to teach new skills, promote critical thinking, and advance sexual and reproductive health. A 2013 grant will support a game-based project to be designed with youth for youth. A Day in the Life is a 3D, single-player, role-playing game that simulates the everyday world of a high school student. The game uses storytelling to explore issues connected to social and emotional health within a larger social, political and economic milieu. Over the next year, Ci3 will prototype, playtest, and program the game, evaluating the game design experience, the gameplay experience, and its ability to disseminate the game widely.

Youth Related Grant Highlights 2012:
Advocates for Youth, Washington, DC.

  • $50,000 for general operating support.  Advocates for Youth champions young people’s rights to honest sexual health information, confidential sexual health services, and the social and economic opportunities that lead to healthy lives. Staff provide information, training, and assistance to youth-serving organizations, policy makers, youth activists, and the media in the US and in the Global South. Advocates advances a philosophy of rights, respect, and responsibility. This philosophy underpins its efforts to shift the societal paradigm from fear, shame, and denial towards acceptance that sexuality is a normal, healthy part of being human and that young people, when given respect and all of the tools they need, will take personal responsibility for their sexual health and rights. Central to Advocates’ identity is its authentic partnership with young people, including a youth-infused staff and board. A general support grant in 2012 will help Advocates expand its engagement, training, and support of young leaders
  • $10,000 for the 1 in 3 Campaign Storytelling Convening. The 1 in 3 Campaign uses storytelling to engage ‘millennial’ youth in efforts to de-stigmatize abortion and ultimately create a more enabling cultural environment to underpin policy and legal efforts to ensure safe, affordable abortion access for all women. A day-long convening in late summer/early fall 2012 will bring together approximately ten abortion storytelling efforts to provide an opportunity to learn from one another and to enhance collaboration among these initiatives
