I spent National Adoption Awareness Month (November) trying to understand more about the workings of the South Carolina Department of Social Services. I kept hoping there would be a great story.

We have had children moving in and out of our house for a few years. We have been hugely criticized and questioned about why we decided to accept temporary child placements.

Right now, in my home state of South Carolina, there is a disaster of a social services system. We have multiple problems at play here. But one of our largest, and in my opinion, easily fixed, is the issue of caseworkers.

Foster Children In our country, there are somewhere around 410,000 children in foster care on any given day. Roughly 110,000 of these children are available for adoption. The average age of a waiting child is eight years old.
