Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York

An anonymous donor has given $1.2 million to help some of New York’s poorest families buy food and necessities during the coronavirus shutdown — a windfall that staff at the New York Council of Nonprofits say comes without precedent. 

Forty-two out of 59 New York neighborhoods have seen risks to children’s well-being increase overall since the previous year, according to a new report released by the Citizens’ Committee for Children (CCC), a nonprofit advocacy group.

The child advocacy group Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC) recently released a unique report ranking 59 New York City communities by trends in health, housing stability, income security and other risk indicators for youth.

Stephanie Gendell, a key strategist behind recent legislative victories for child welfare advocates in New York, has joined the ranks of government. Gendell, who was previously the associate executive director for policy and advocacy at the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York (CCC), started last week at the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), the city agency responsible for juvenile justice, foster care and other support services for struggling families.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation late last month making it easier for close relatives and family friends to receive financial support for kinship guardianship agreements (KinGAP). Godparents, step-parents, the adoptive parents of half-siblings, neighbors and other kinds of kin will be eligible for the subsidy until the child turns 21.
