The coronavirus pandemic has added urgency to the work of this year’s class of congressional interns with expertise in foster care – the history of their own lives. The fallout of COVID-19 has hit more than 400,000 children and youth in foster care like few other groups of Americans as yet another trauma in their lives, and none more so than young people approaching independence.

Florida Congresswoman Joins Congressional Coalition on Adoption

Rep. Donna Shalala (D-Fla.) became the newest co-chair of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption (CCA) earlier this week. The largest bicameral, bipartisan congressional member organization, CCA focuses on issues related to adoption and foster care, as well as domestic and international child welfare.

On Nov. 12, I paid a visit to Becky Weichhand, a friend and colleague battling a terrible sort of cancer. It was a rainy night in Washington, D.C. I alighted from my rideshare and ran up Becky’s steps, trying to avoid getting wet.
