Casey Foundation Makes Clear: JDAI is Now a System-Wide Juvenile Reform Movement

The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative – known widely in the field simply as JDAI – is the longest-running philanthropic reform effort in juvenile justice. And in commencing this year’s JDAI conference for those involved in it across hundreds of sites in the country, the man in charge of it acknowledged that the name was no longer accurate.

A new program has been announced that is designed to help juvenile justice leaders rethink what their probation services look like and how it interacts with young people. The Transforming Juvenile Probation certificate program will be November 4-8 in Washington, D.C.

Report: Under Trump Immigration Agenda, Detained Juveniles At Risk of Deportation

The Trump administration’s policies on immigration and deportation are increasing the risk of juvenile justice system-involvement and trauma among children and youth, according to advocates. The Annie E. Casey Foundation just released an update to its 2014 guide, “Noncitizen Youth in the Juvenile Justice System,” in which it outlines policy and practice recommendations for city and state governments interfacing with federal immigration mandates.

    Detention Overrides Can Become a Rule-Eating Exception

    Detention risk assessments are hardly a sexy subject. But in the juvenile justice system, they are in fact a moral declaration of fairness. It is a reflection of a system thinking about what factors contribute to a risky enough situation that detaining a youth before trial is necessary.
