Documented child abuse and neglect declined for a second consecutive year, while investigations of such maltreatment continued to increase. Nationwide, 3.5 million children were the subject of at least one report to child protective services (CPS), according to the federal “Child Maltreatment” report for fiscal year 2017.

Earlier this week, while reporting on the confirmation of new Administration for Children and Families (ACF) leader Lynn Johnson, Youth Services Insider speculated that perhaps an agreement had been reached, or assurances had been made, about a timeline to finalize new child welfare data collection.

After a confirmation process that included a standoff over the Trump administration’s delay of new data collection on foster care and adoption, Lynn Johnson was confirmed to lead the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) just before the Labor Day weekend.

The nomination of Lynn Johnson, the Trump administration’s choice to lead the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), was approved by the Senate Finance Committee on a party-line vote held before the July 4 holiday.

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is planning to delay the collection of new data on foster youth and families until fiscal 2022, and also plans to reconsider the new rules set up for that process by the Obama administration in December of 2016.

Lynn Johnson, President Trump’s choice to lead the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the Department of Health and Human Services, is scheduled for next Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
