Detaining Status Offenders is a Consequence without Understanding

Growing up, I missed zero days of school from kindergarten to graduation. Zero unexcused absences and zero unexcused tardies. My brother, on the other hand, was the exact opposite, often having a phantom “stomach ache” right before we had to walk to the bus stop.

Senate Judiciary Approves $833 Million Over Five Years for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act

The Senate Judiciary Committee approved yet another attempt to update the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA), which has not been reauthorized since 2002. The bill, S.1169, would phase out the lone exception in the law that permits the detention of status offenders; set new terms for failure to comply with the act; limit expenditures on mentoring and require the collection of new data on juvenile offenders.

Bipartisan Juvenile Justice Bill Would Phase Out Valid Court Order, Demand Data on Isolation

A bipartisan bill to reauthorize federal juvenile justice policy and funding would phase out an exception permitting the detention of status offenders, and require states to report more information each year to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

    Groups Propose Structure for Less Courts in Status Offense System

    A flurry of resources were announced recently on standards, practices and assistance related to the handling of status-offending youth. A voluminous collection of model standards was issued by the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (CJJ), which represents the state advisory groups in each state, followed by a white paper by think tank Vera Institute of Justice on best practices for handling status offenders.
