The New York-based Doris Duke Charitable Foundation invested nearly $6 million this month aimed at bolstering leadership in the child well-being sector. “Effective and diverse social sector leadership is critical for ending intergenerational cycles of poverty and persistently inequitable outcomes for families and children,” said Lola Adedokun, program director for child well-being at the foundation.

This past Christmas, approximately 9,800 children in the U.S. spent the holiday in large-scale institutions holding more than 100 kids each. These children came from countries including Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador — nations with the highest child murder rates in the world — seeking refuge and safety in the United States.

The National Quality Improvement Center for Adoption and Guardianship Support and Preservation (QIC-AG) is a five-year cooperative agreement, funded through the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Children’s Bureau, designed to promote permanence when reunification is no longer a goal and improve adoption and guardianship preservation and support.

After a report last summer ranked New Mexico 49th in the nation on child well-being, advocacy group New Mexico Voices for Children released a policy agenda that it hopes will guide incoming policymakers.

A new report from Children Now details wide disparities in children’s well-being across California’s 58 counties. The 2016–2017 California County Scorecard of Children’s Well-Being looks at a series of indicators organized around the three domains of child welfare and economic well-being; health; and education.

California’s record drought is driving a lot of change with public alarm matching the rising temperature.  According to a recent poll, a record 94 percent of Californians “believe that the drought is serious, and one-third support mandatory rationing.”

An annual publication that assesses the state of child health and well-being, the Kids Count Data Book looks at 16 indicators to rank states based in four areas: economic well-being, education, health, and family and community.

The University of North Carolina Injury Prevention Research Center provides an introduction to LONGSCAN, a project which was funded in part by the Children’s Bureau for two decades. Among the subject areas covered by the study are well-being, safety and permanency.
