A new study from the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry suggests that children enrolled in Medicaid aren’t just seeing an increase in prescriptions of antipsychotic medicine.
In the “Concurrent antipsychotic, psychotropic use common among Medicaid-enrolled children” study, researchers also saw a marked increase in the combination of antipsychotic medicine with psychotropic drugs, a class that includes stimulants, antidepressants, mood stabilizers and other drugs.
Researchers directed a national study for children ages 6 to 18 years old who were continuously enrolled in Medicaid to determine the rate of concurrent prescription of both antipsychotic and psychotropic drugs.
